Stella Zee
Stella was born in Shanghai, China. As a young child, her family moved to Hong Kong. It was
during those formative years that her grandfather, a renowned calligrapher, recognized her
intuitive ability and encouraged her to practice. She filled pages of calligraphy, establishing a
philosophical expressionistic style imbued with poetic essence.
With her family’s move to Brazil, Stella ingested the flair, enthusiasm and vivid light of her new
country. The Brazilian exuberant love of color and rhythm informed her already highly
developed sense of line in her calligraphy.
The next key in her development would come when she attended The School of the Art
Institute of Chicago and earned an MFA in Painting and Drawing. This synthesis would play out
repeatedly in her mature works.
“I use painting as forms of my artistic expression from my diverse cultural background focusing
on elements of nature, rhythm, light and space, to create nourishing environments of
vulnerability and resilience.”
